8 Things To Consider When Designing Your Patio

When choosing your patio paving, you have a range of options available to you. Let’s have a look at the options available and get you started on your patio design.

1. Laying Patterns.

Patio Kits.

You can choose to go for a Patio Kit, sometimes known as a Project Pack, which can be a great, cost-effective way to create a unique paving layout for your patio. The four different sizes of paving slabs will fit together in either a random layout or a carefully thought out pattern.

We stock Patio Kits in a range of Indian Sandstone, Granite, Slate & Limestone Paving, with each stone type having its own aesthetic benefits and individual characteristics.
See our blog on the range of Patio Kits we offer here.

Single-Sized Slabs.

Alternatively, you can opt for single sized slabs to create a more uniform and regimented layout to your paving.
We stock 600×900, 600×600, 600×300 and 800×200 natural stone paving slabs in a range of stone types and finishes. With 1200×400, 1000×1000, 800×800, 600×600 and 800×400 slabs available in our porcelain range.

Mixed Size Slabs.

Your third option is to create a custom design using a mixture of sizes of paving slab. When it comes to this option, there is a range of design possibilities, size combinations and layout options available.

This can be particularly effective when combining our Blue-Black and Silver-Grey Granite paving to create a contemporary exterior space.

2. Steps.

Steps don’t need to be a purely functional feature for your garden.

If your garden is multi-level, you can create a beautiful feature using Natural Stone Paving to connect your patio to the rest of your exterior space.

Our Sawn & Honed Paving options such as Sawn Mint & Kandla Grey Sandstone are great options which will add a touch of class to your patio. The smooth surfaces offer a luxurious finish and are great for traditional or classic patio designs.

All of our Natural Stone & Porcelain Paving can be cut to size in order to create steps that will match the rest of your patio area.

3. Centrepiece.

Designing your patio around a centrepiece will offer a natural focal point to your garden.

Whether it’s a seating or dining area, fire pit or sandstone circle, a focal point can be a great place to start when designing your patio.

This design style is especially suited to stone types with a more neutral colour palette such as Kandla Grey Sandstone, Blue-Black or Silver Grey Granite. As it allows your focal point to take centre-stage. Allowing your Patio Paving to compliment your overall garden design rather than stealing the show!

You could even use your lawn as the centrepiece to your garden. An edging solution such as Granite Setts will pair up perfectly with our Granite Paving to separate your patio from your lawn. This also looks great when done in a semi-circle design for a truly contemporary finish.

4. Lighten Up.

Light colours can give your patio that Summer feeling all year round.

A light coloured paving option will liven up your garden and create a more spacious feeling by brightening up any dark and dingy corners which may not see much natural light.

Our Sawn Mint Indian Sandstone is a perfect example of a light coloured paving option which will bring life to your garden. Its blend of beige, ivory and cream tones work great in areas with a lot of plant life and flowers which looks especially great throughout the spring and summer!

5. Consider Porcelain.

Porcelain Paving is the perfect way to create a modern patio design with a luxury finish.

The man-made stone is low-maintenance and scratch resistant, as well as being incredibly durable. This means that it is suitable for driveways as a great alternative to Natural Stone Paving options.
Porcelain is also great for use around swimming pools and hot tubs due to its non-slip qualities.

We offer a range of finishes in our Porcelain Paving, such as; Wood Grain, Concrete, Belgian Bluestone and Slate Effect. All of which offer their own unique visual qualities and a modern, designer look which is sure to impress!

6. Go Modern.

If you’re considering a modern patio design, think monochrome and minimal.

Blacks, whites and greys are the perfect starting place for any modern patio. The minimalistic feel of these neutral colours will create a spacious feeling to your garden and will open up a wealth of design opportunities.

Make a statement with a bold and attention-grabbing modern patio which will bring your home up to date, as well as adding value to your property.
The addition of patio furniture will allow you to utilise your patio space as an outdoor dining and living area, bringing the indoors out.
This will extend your home to make the most of all of your space. The addition of patio heaters or a fire pit will contribute to the modern feel and allow you to get the most out of your exterior space well into the autumn months.

Our range of Kandla Grey Sandstone, Blue-Black Slate and Porcelain Paving all offer stunning modern patio design options.

7. Think Traditional.

Natural Stone Paving and traditional patio designs go hand-in-hand.

Worn textures like our Rustic Copper Slate, Raj Green or Autumn Brown Indian Sandstone are perfect for creating a traditional, classic patio design that will never go out of style.

The earthy tones within the paving offer a natural and organic feel to your patio space, which will be complemented by the natural elements.

You can create a blend of modern and traditional styles with products such as our Kandla Grey Indian Sandstone. This stone offers a riven surface which suits a traditional design, with a blend of grey and blue tones which will look great as part of a modern patio.

8. Don’t Stop at Paving.

Once you’ve decided on a style of patio paving, it’s time to consider wall cladding. A range of exterior wall cladding products is available which can transform your exterior space.

Split Face Mosaic Tiles are available in Slate or Quartzite. These suit any modern patio to create an eye-catching feature wall. See our range of colours and finishes here.
