Smooth Paving
Transform your garden or patio with the medley of natural colours and tones found within our smooth paving. Choose from beautiful variations in colour throughout each natural stone paver which features its own unique tones formed naturally over thousands of years, or our man-made porcelain paving which offers a more consistent look, promising your garden or patio a finish filled with character!
What Is Sawn Paving?
Sawn stone paving is sawn straight off the block rather than being split naturally. The sawn slabs are then cut down to size and the top surface is honed or sandblasted, creating a smooth finish with a slight sheen. Our Smooth Sandstone Paving is sawn on all 6 sides, meaning that the 4 edges are also straight and machine-cut with a smooth finish to complete the contemporary look. Sawn sandstone paving offers an entirely different appeal to riven sandstone and features more pronounced patterns and colours.
Sawn Indian Sandstone Colours
Indian sawn paving is available in a wide range of colours ranging from the neutral cream or grey tones in our Sawn Mint and Kandla Grey Sandstone to the range of earthy browns and greens in our Raj Green Sandstone. If you’re looking for something a little more vibrant, Rippon Buff and Rainbow Sandstone feature some more eye-catching colours!
Sealing Natural Stone Paving
It’s generally advised to seal sandstone paving slabs to help prevent any staining, as well as helping to prevent the growth of any moss or algae. You may want to consider sealing your paving slabs, especially if your stone is light in colour, as any stains will be more visible. However, sealing is not compulsory and there is a wide range of sealing products on the market which will provide various results. Some sealants will simply seal and protect, whereas others can be used to enhance the colour of your slabs. Sealing your sandstone patio paving will also help to protect against other general wear such as fading which can sometimes occur over long periods in places where the stone is likely to see excessive use, such as public walkways. As for when to apply a sealer, there are no specific guidelines and most landscapers and tradespersons will have their own tried and tested methods. Some people choose to seal their paving slabs before laying to prevent any staining during the laying process and others prefer to leave their stone unsealed for up to a year, allowing the Indian sandstone slabs to weather naturally before applying a sealant. We always advise speaking to a local tradesperson who will be able to assess the many variables within your environment and offer specific advice for your project.
We offer a range of sealing and cleaning products here which are all suitable for use on our sawn paving. If in doubt, speak to one of our experts who would be happy to answer your questions and provide any advice you may need!
What is Calibrated Sandstone Paving?
The term ‘Calibrated’ means that the slabs have been cut to a consistent thickness. Calibrated sandstone paving is easier to lay than a non-calibrated stone as it eliminates any large variations in thickness between each slab, removing the need to take this into consideration during the laying process. Our Riven Sandstone Paving is calibrated to 22mm and our Sawn Sandstone is calibrated to 20mm and an allowance should be made for +/- 5mm.
Smooth Porcelain Paving
Porcelain paving is made from a mix of clay, sand and minerals baked at a high-temperature. The resulting paving slabs are non-porous and hard-wearing. Once fired, each slab is ground and polished, ensuring they are of a consistent size and colour. This makes the porcelain paving stones easier to lay and means that your patio will maintain a consistent look. If you are looking for a highly-polished finish, porcelain is the ideal choice!
The consistency of the vitrified porcelain paving also makes it easier to take flooring from inside to outside the home. This means you can significantly extend your living space and create an alfresco haven. Porcelain slabs are highly durable when you compare them to other outdoor paving options. They are resistant to stains, mould and mildew, making porcelain paving the perfect solution for high-traffic areas such as patios and pathways and driveways.
The surface of our Porcelain Paving is flat with a slight texture to add extra grip and a non-slip finish to the tiles.
