Riven Paving Slabs
Riven paving slabs feature naturally textured surfaces that bring authentic character to traditional patio designs. The surface texture is created when stone is split along its natural layers, producing unique variation in every slab.
Nustone offers riven paving in sandstone, slate, and limestone, available as mixed-size patio kits or single-sized slabs. This traditional finish suits period properties, cottage gardens, and any outdoor space where natural character matters more than uniformity.

What Is Riven Paving
The term 'riven' refers to the surface texture of the stone. Riven slabs are created when natural stone is hand-split along its naturally formed layers rather than machine-cut. This splitting process exposes the internal structure of the stone, producing textured surfaces with natural undulation.
Each riven paving slab is unique. The splitting process creates individual patterns of texture, colour, and surface detail that cannot be replicated. This natural variation is the defining characteristic of riven paving and the reason it suits traditional garden designs.
Our riven slabs feature hand-dressed edges, adding to the organic appearance. This finish makes riven paving a popular alternative to reclaimed Yorkstone, offering similar traditional character at more accessible pricing.
Riven vs Smooth Paving
Choosing between riven and smooth paving depends on the style you want to achieve.
Riven Paving
Riven patio slabs have textured, naturally split surfaces. Each slab varies in surface detail and undulation. The finish is rustic and traditional. Riven paving suits cottage gardens, period properties, and designs where natural character is the priority. The texture provides natural grip but requires more effort to clean than flat surfaces.
Smooth Paving
Smooth paving (sawn or porcelain) has flat, consistent surfaces. The finish is clean and contemporary. Smooth paving suits modern gardens, new-build properties, and minimalist designs. The flat surface is easier to clean but lacks the natural character of riven stone. View our porcelain paving for smooth options.
Which to Choose
Choose riven paving for traditional settings where natural texture and authentic character matter. Choose smooth paving for contemporary designs where clean lines and low maintenance are priorities. Ordering samples of both finishes helps you compare before committing.
Tumbled Riven Paving
Tumbled paving is riven stone that has been passed through a rotating drum. This process softens the edges, corners, and surface of each slab, giving the stone an aged appearance as if it had been in place for years.
The tumbling process retains the natural texture of riven paving but smooths harsh variations. The result is a lightly riven surface that feels softer to the touch. Tumbling also reduces the porosity of the stone, making tumbled slabs easier to maintain and less prone to staining than standard riven paving.
What Is Calibrated Paving
Calibrated paving has been machine-cut to a consistent thickness on the underside. This uniformity makes laying easier and faster, as each slab sits at the same level without requiring individual adjustment.
Our riven paving slabs are calibrated to 22mm thickness. An allowance of +/- 5mm should be made for natural surface variation, which is inherent to riven stone and creates its characteristic texture.
Riven Paving Materials
Riven paving slabs are available in several natural stone types, each with distinct characteristics.
Sandstone
Sandstone riven slabs offer warm, natural colour variation. Each slab features unique tones formed over thousands of years. Colours range from cool greys to warm buffs, greens, and browns. Sandstone suits both traditional and transitional garden designs. Explore our sandstone paving range.
Slate
Slate riven paving provides darker tones with distinctive layered texture. The natural riven surface of slate creates strong visual interest. Slate suits both modern and traditional designs depending on the colour chosen.
Limestone
Limestone offers subtle, elegant colouring with a lighter riven texture than sandstone or slate. The understated appearance suits formal gardens and period properties. Limestone is one of the most versatile riven paving options.
Sealing Riven Paving
Sealing riven paving slabs is recommended but not compulsory. Sealing helps prevent staining and reduces moss and algae growth. It can also protect against fading over time.
Types of Sealer
Some sealers simply protect the stone without changing its appearance. Others enhance the natural colours, bringing out deeper tones. Choose based on whether you want the stone to look wet (enhanced) or retain its natural dry appearance (protective only).
When to Seal
There is no single correct approach. Some landscapers seal before laying to prevent staining during installation. Others leave the stone unsealed for up to a year, allowing it to weather naturally first. Consult a local tradesperson to assess what suits your project.
Where Riven Paving Works Best
Riven patio slabs suit applications where traditional character and natural texture are priorities.
Traditional Patios
Period properties and established gardens suit riven paving. The natural texture complements traditional architecture and mature planting. Riven slabs create patios that look as though they have been in place for years.
Cottage Gardens
Informal cottage-style planting works naturally with riven surfaces. The organic texture of riven paving complements relaxed, naturalistic garden designs.
Garden Pathways
Pathways through planted areas suit riven slabs. The textured surface provides grip and the natural appearance integrates with surrounding greenery.
Sizes Available
Riven paving is available in a range of sizes. Our 600 x 900 slabs are the most popular single-size option, creating a sense of space in any patio design. Mixed-size patio kits combine multiple slab sizes for varied, traditional layouts. Browse our full paving slabs range to see all size options.
Colours Available
Riven paving slabs are available in a wide range of natural colours. Grey riven slabs create neutral backdrops that complement any garden style. Buff and cream options brighten shaded areas. Multi-toned colours like Raj Green feature earthy natural tones that work together across the patio surface. Each colour option includes natural variation inherent to riven stone.
